Fijians have been urged to express their opinions in the consultation process on the proposed 17.5 per cent tariff increase sought by Energy Fiji Limited.

The call has come from Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission boss Joel Abraham as the consultation process starts in several parts of the country.

EFL has sought the tariff increase citing a need to provide reliable electricity supply given its ageing infrastructure and assets, adding that the last tariff rise was in 2011 and that inflation needed to be accounted for.

Mr Abraham said the consultation process was the correct forum to be heard.

“We want to hear their views, we want to hear what the Fijian people are saying. There is no point in complaining about things when you don’t actively participate,” he said.

“Concerns have to be raised at the right forum, people can have any viewpoint and instead of being a keyboard warrior and posting on different social media, if you want to go on social media please go on the FCCC facebook page, find it like it and leave your comments there.”

Mr Abraham said FCCC had received opinions which were for and against the increase.

“The people can say a wide array of things. They can say they don’t want it or not,” he said.

“The important thimg is that they come forward and say something. When you don’t say something, you are sitting in silence, you are not voicing what you believe or want out of this process.”

FCCC has started analysing the submissions and Mr Abraham said it would take them at least three months to decide whether to grant the tariff increase
