Taxi Driver Denies Abduction Charge

A 42-year-old taxi driver pleaded not guilty to abduction charges at the High Court in Suva on Monday.

The accused who is facing one count of abduction of a young person under the age of 18 years with intent to have carnal knowledge, appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar.

It is alleged that the accused on April 1 at Nasinu, with intent to have carnal knowledge with the complainant being under the age of 18 years, unlawfully took the complainant out of the possession and against the will of her father.

State prosecutor from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions Lavenia Bogitini told the court that the complainant was 17 years of age at the time of the offence and was a school student.

She also told the court that the prosecution’s case was a short trial with four witnesses.

Justice Goundar said to the accused that he was to be present at all of his court dates and if he failed to appear on his court dates and trial, the trial would proceed in absentia for the accused.

The trial was set to commence on August 26 before Justice Aruna Aluthge.
