A father’s plan to celebrate his 60th birthday were dashed because he will now be mourning the sudden death of his son, Avishek Aman Kumar.

The sugarcane farmer in Daku, outside Labasa Town, Mr Arun Prasad said a relative had called to tell him that Avishek died after an accident at Olosara in Sigatoka on Tuesday around 5:30pm.

“My wife and I haven’t been eating food since then because we are still in a state of disbelief and shock,” Mr Prasad said.

“Avishek celebrated his 26th birthday on April 21 and was looking forward to spend some time with us because my birthday is this Friday.”

He was the youngest of three siblings and has been in Sigatoka for more than three years working at Energy Fiji Limited (EFL) as an electrical engineering technician.

“It has been about four to five months since he bought a new motorbike because he had great interest in bike rides,” Mr Prasad said.

“He was single, very humble, friendly and enjoyed his life.

“Just before I spoke to you my eldest son called and cried over the phone while waiting at Lautoka Hospital for the post-mortem examination result of his younger brother.”

The family is trying to find out what exactly happened. Whether he died while driving his motorbike or he was hit by another vehicle.

The funeral gathering and services will be held this Saturday at Daku at 1pm.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the 26-year-old employee of EFL and a motorcyclist died in an accident at Olosara, in Sigatoka on Tuesday and investigation continues.

The road death toll now stands at 22 compared to 28 last year.
