Man, 25, Gets 15-Year Jail Term For Rape

The High Court will continue to pass lengthy sentences for crimes against children, says Justice Salesi Temo.

He made the comment as he handed down a 15-year jail term to a man convicted of raping a six-year-old boy.

The man and the child were neighbours.

The 25-year-old admitted that on November 2, 2017, he asked the child to come inside his house where he sodomised the child.

The child was on his way to the shop to buy cookies.

Justice Temo said the action of the man was not that expected of a neighbour in Fiji.

He said in an ever-increasingly urbanised Fiji, people of various cultures lived side by side and there were people with children.

He told the man that as a neighbour he was supposed to have protected the child, but instead he exploited that trust.

Justice Temo said the court would not tolerate sexual violence towards children.

He said the courts would continue to pass harsh and long sentences to remind would-be offenders of the court’s stand on such crimes.

He told the man that by committing the offence he had not shown any regard to the rights of the child.

The 25-year-old is to serve 14 years as non-parole period.
