Fiji Airways Fijian 7s head coach Gareth Baber is focused on his next assignment which is the Samoa Pacific Games that gets underway in Apia on July 7-20.

Baber said the team would take a break from camp as they need to be back with their families.

“The players need to rest and recover,” he said.

“We’ve the Pacific Games coming up. We’ll prepare for that. We’re looking to play in a tournament in Germany in September.”

Baber said he’s looking at grooming more players and exposing some of them overseas. This is to see how they behave and how they are when under pressure situations.

“It is a great achievement by a group that had difficulty all season and previous season as well. But it is all about growing a team and developing a team.

“Part of that is developing how to be more resilient when that pressure comes on.

“In the space of two and half years the team has grown to what you saw last weekend. We want to say a big thank you to everyone in the country.”

Baber said there are no major injuries in the team.

“Apenisa Cakaubalavu had an ankle injury and is out for four weeks but will have that assessed now.

“Meli Derenalagi had a knee injury but these are the things that happen towards the end of a season.

“They need time off and they need to recover and get healthy again.”
