Fresh’et Navy and Army Green will play in the final of the Suva Rugby Union’s Escott Shield championship.

In the first semi-final at Bidesi Park, Suva yesterday Army Green pipped Fire Wardens side 11-10 in a close encounter. While in the second semi-final Navy beat defending champions Police Blue 26-14 to secure a spot in the final.

Speaking to SUNsports, Navy Rugby manager Osea Natuva said they were overwhelmed with the players’ performance as they are confident of winning the title after a lapse of three years.

“The boys played a very tough, physical match and had a lot of heart as they played throughout the 80 minutes,” Natuva said.

“We have been defeated by Police continuously for the past three years and the win today is a testament of our hardwork and determination.

“However despite the win there were some areas of play that need to be rectified. We need to do more work on our cohesion, restarts and some basic elements of the game.

“We will now return and regroup ourselves and come back prepared for a tough battle against Army.”

Fiji Airways Fijian 7s forward Meli Derenalagi was registered for the Navy side but did not play as he was still recuperating after a hectic 2018/19 HSBC World Sevens Series.

Natuva said they are yet to decide on whether he would play in the final.

Police Blue coach Solomone Lute said despite the loss they performed to the best of their ability.

“I know the result was not as expected but the boys gave their all for this game.

“There was a lot of new players playing but they still need more game time and experience but we’ll go back and definitely come back prepared next year.”
