As teenagers, Koto and Ilisapeci Matemosi learned how to make traditional artwork and handicraft from their mother.

Even though their mother has passed away, the sisters, who hail from Namuka, Lau still carry on her work by using the skills she taught them.

“To continue her legacy, we have to continue with the designs she taught us,” said Ilisapeci Matemosi, 24.

Despite pulling their designs from tradition, the sisters say the items they make are unique and profitable in the modern market. However, they stressed the importance of the quality in their products.

“Keeping the authenticity of your products matters a lot, especially in the national economy,” said Koto Matemosi, 32. “It talks about your identity and everything. That’s why we always maintain good, authentic products.”

“Nowadays we’re facing difficulties in the young generation to keep this artwork, but I would say we are proud to have maintained our mother’s legacy and the traditional artwork,” she continued.

The sisters added that selling their items allows them to support themselves as well as their father and two other siblings. They encouraged other young people to take their skills to the next level if they want to do the same.

“This is a platform we have to showcase our skills. If you have the chance, make the most of it to expose who you really are and what your talents are and to support yourself,” said Ilisapeci.
