A 13-year-old boy was bitten by a dog yesterday after he got off the bus at Sakoca in Tacirua.

The dog belongs to a resident but was not restrained.

The incident was the latest in a series of attacks on people by stray dogs in the area.

It came in the wake of an attack on two-year-old Amari Whippy in Narewa, Nadi and another attack on a kindergarten student in a Suva school.

Reports continue to be received by the Fiji Sun about the stray dog problem.

In Sakoca it has caused tension between some of the dog owners and residents.

Victim Vatere Matawai said a dog ran at him and bit him at the bus stop junction.

He and his auntie went to complain to the dog owner but the owner refused to do anything.

Vatere’s aunty, Sereima Matawai, said dog owners in the neighborhood did not seem to care or take action when residents get bitten by their dogs.

“My children are scared of these dogs because they tend after run at them from nowhere and so we have to make sure we are carrying something to defend ourselves,” Ms Matawai said.

Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), Clinic shelter manager Shaneel Narayan said dog owners could be charged and taken to court if the complainant lodged an official complaint to the Police.

“No doubt there is a rise in stray dog population around the country and we and other authorities are trying to help minimise the problem because some are causing injuries to innocent people,”

Mr Narayan said that complainants could also contact the SPCA team who would try and trap the stray dogs, access them and if possible find good home for them.

“But if the dog happens to be aggressive and is causing harm to members of the public then we will put it down to sleep,” he said.

Dog owners have been urged to take responsibility of their dogs and keep them in check at all times.
