Former Labasa Town Council Officials In Court For Alleged Theft Of Coins From Parking Meters

Former Labasa Town Council officials fronted the Labasa Magistrates Court today for an offence allegedly committed last month.

Ashok Kumar and Sashi Kant Shandil were charged by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) with one (1) count of Theft under the Crimes Act of 2009.

The duo, who previously served as Head of Department for the Parking Meter section and Messenger for the Council respectively, are alleged to have stolen coins from the parking meters situated in Labasa Town.

Footage obtained from surveillance cameras showed the men collecting coins from the parking meters and putting it in their pockets.

FICAC State Counsel Darren Hickes appeared for Prosecution. He informed the court that there was no objection to bail and that first phase disclosures had been served.

Both accused were released on bail bond of $500.00 each. They were instructed to report to the nearest Police Post every Saturday, with a Stop Departure Order issued accordingly.

The matter has been adjourned to 19 August, 2019.
