The Nadereivalu clan from Namalata Village in Tailevu North has unanimously agreed to renew a dairy farm lease on their land.

Namalata Village chief and head of the Nadereivalu clan Ratu Isaia Tuirakiwaimaro said a total of 217 acres of their land was leased by a dairy farm company and it was about to expire.

However, he said, only half of the land would be leased and the other half would be used by the members of the clan.

He said they had sent a consent letter to the office of the iTaukei Lands Trust Board (TLTB) at Korovou.

Ratu Isaia said the lease renewal was also a show of support to Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama, who was urging iTaukei landowners to lease their land for developments. He is also urging other iTaukei landowners to develop their land and not leave them idle.

The Namalata chief is also encouraging his people to make use of the assistance made available by Government through the Ministry of Agriculture and help them draw up a farming plan.

Most of the villagers in Namalata are engaged in subsistence farming. Ratu Isaia believes commercial farming is now the way forward.
