Sawaieke youths from Gau, who were involved in the Rural Millionaire Programme, have funded the construction of the new Sawaieke Hall and Evacuation Centre.

This was confirmed to the Fiji Sun by Sawaieke Village elder, Ratu Sevanaia Laua. The new hall, according to Nacanieli Waqa of Sawaieke Village who is the construction team foreman, would be completed in the first week of next month (July).

Speaking from Sawaieke yesterday Mr Waqa said construction was now in the final stages and they were also waiting for more materials to be shipped in from Suva.

By July 1, the villagers hope to clean up the entire building and its surroundings. The new hall is being built to withstand a Category 5 Cyclone.

Mr Waqa, a carpenter by profession, said he was also teaching carpentry skills to the village youths.

The Roko Tui Lomaiviti, Ratu Penijamini Tokaduadua, said the new hall would be the venue of the Lomaiviti Provincial Council meeting on July 31.

“Our chief guest will be Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama,” he said.

Mr Bainimarama will open the hall before opening the meeting.
