A Fiji Airways Lautoka Farmers Carnival contestant has had a change of heart as far as community advocacy is concerned.

Nikhat Nazreen Nisha, 17, who had planned on advocating on the impact of climate change, decided to do something different after visiting the Golden Age Old People’s Home at Natabua, Lautoka on Wednesday.

Filled with emotions, she now wants to advocate on the importance of taking care of our elderly citizens.

She said: “I was so moved today and I couldn’t stop crying. Looking at some of the faces of these elderly people some of whom may have been ignored and rejected by their family members. One elderly lady kept crying and I just went and hugged her and cried with her.

“I was actually advocating on Climate Change, but today after my visit here at the Old People’s Home, I think we need to advocate more on how children should treat their parents.

“Even if they do something wrong, but they still our parents. Our parents are our blessings and they don’t deserve to be here, they deserve to be in their homes. When children are small, the parents are there for them, but when they grow old they tend to forget them.

“Sometimes I believe we have to learn to forgive each other and forgive what has been done to us in the past. If we don’t forgive that will affect parents and also affect our future.”

Ms Nisha is a photographic editor by profession and works at the Photographic Fiji Photo and Cinema. She is sponsored by Ronil’s Amusement and lists her hobbies as reading, cooking, socialising, hiking, dancing and charity works. She lives in Matintar, Nadi.

The carnival ends tomorrow.
