A 53-year-old woman is having a difficult time coming to terms with the loss of her 33-year-old son, who died in a fatal accident in Labasa on Wednesday night.

Lalita Devi of Naleba said she cannot believe Yogesh Rohit Chand was hit by a 10-wheeler truck and died near the Naleba College junction.

“He left home around 4:30am for work and as usual would return from work around 8pm because it takes three hours to walk from the main road to the house,” Mrs Devi said.

“A relative of mine called around 7pm to inform me that Yogesh was hit by a truck that offloaded gravel and was on its way to Labasa Town.

“My husband and I ran to the scene which is about a few kilometres away from the house and found him in really bad condition.

“He was my eldest son and we are looking after his seven-year-old daughter after his wife left him a few years ago,” said the mother of four children.

“The child, a Year Two student of Naleba Primary School doesn’t know that her father passed away.

“He was a very hardworking son who would help around in house work and even take out time to help the neighbours.

“I still can’t believe he’s gone despite what I heard and saw.”

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the driver of a 10-wheeler truck was in Police custody following the incident.

“The victim, a labourer, was walking along the Labasa and Wainikoro Road when he was allegedly bumped by the truck driven by the 43-year-old suspect,” Ms Naisoro said.

“The victim was rushed to the Labasa Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“Investigations continue.”

She confirmed that the road death toll currently stands at 25 compared to 28 for the same period last year.
