A four-year-old boy is Fiji’s latest drowning victim.

Penaia Driu drowned in a stagnant pond opposite Navatulevu Village along Denarau Road in Nadi early yesterday morning.

It is believed the young lad fell into a pond a few metres from his home and his mother later tried to revive him, but was unsuccessful.

He was later conveyed to the Nadi Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police confirmed the incident after a report was received at the Nadi Police Station at 9.38am.

Meanwhile, when the Fiji Sun team visited the family home yesterday, the boy’s father, Josaia Tuidraki, said he was told by Police officers not to give any interview to the media. Penaia’s death brings the drowning death toll to 17 so far this year, compared with 21 for the same period last year.
