A family of Waimalika in Nadi has renewed its call for either speed humps or a speed camera to be installed in the area after a vehicle crashed into their compound yesterday morning.

Family members say they want this done immediately because the area is prone to accidents, something they claim stems from speeding drivers.

Uday Singh, the owner of the house, claims speeding is a daily occurrence along the stretch past the Nadi International Airport on the way to the Sabeto flats.

Mr Singh said the family would continue to face incidents such as this, which is not he said the first for the family, until the authorities took action.

He said the family considers itself lucky after the incident.

“We were asleep in the morning when we were woken up by a big crash sound,” Mr Singh said.

“We quickly ran outside of the house and saw that the car had crashed in to our gate.

“We were not able to get outside the gate because it is an electric gate and it was completely locked.

“Luckily, the Police arrived on time and no one died from that accident.”

He estimates damage at $5000.

Mr Singh said two people died at the same spot from a similar incident last year.

He said the authorities should consider people living by the roadside, whose houses were not fenced, school children crossing the roads and those in the nearby village.

“This is not the first time the accident happened to us, before it was just a wire fence and a vehicle that was speeding, hit a coconut tree and went into our compound,” Mr Singh.

“We made a petition last year for road humps or a speed camera around here.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the driver lost control of his vehicle which veered off the road.

The driver and passenger escaped unhurt.
