Court Dismisses Firoz Jan Mohammed’s Appeal

The Fiji Court of Appeal dismissed an appeal filed by businessman Firoz Jan Mohammed on Thursday.

The matter was called before Judge Justice William Calanchini.

Justice Calanchini granted the application made by Mohammed to withdraw the appeal on sentence and conviction. The appeal was dismissed accordingly.

Background:

Mohammed with former civil servants – Iliesa Turagacati, Navitalai Tamanitoakula were convicted of bribery, obtaining a financial advantage and abuse of office while their accomplice Aisea Liwaiono was convicted of two counts of dishonestly causing a loss.

They were charged by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption in a $3.1 million road scam.

Mohammed was sentenced to eight years imprisonment with a non-parole period of five years.

Between February 27 and July 20, 2012, Mohammed, while being the director of TF Jan Bulldozing Company Limited, obtained $3.17 million.
