Yasawa Wins Bainimarama Shield

The Mosese Volavola-coached Yasawa Marlins won their first ever Bainimarama Shield yesterday.

And dedicated the 25-13 victory over Nanukuloa to their late patron Saimoni Naivalu who died last week.

The first challenge of the Bainimarama Shield at Churchill Park, Lautoka was played in heavy underfoot.

Nanukuloa drew first blood in the 9th minute through winger Naba Soqonakavika who scored for the Ra team to lead 5-0.

Halfback Sesoni Rokotuiloma extended the lead with a penalty 8-0 in the 24th minute.

In the 35th minute, winger Inia Rokomatu scored for Yasawa.

Halftime: Yasawa 5-8 Nanukuloa.

In the 53rd minute Rusiate Waqa scored under the posts and converted by Joseva Vetaukula to lead 12-8.Sovelisi Nene scored their second try with Vetaukula spot on with the conversion, 19-8.

In the 65th minute flanker Pauliasi Kuli scored for Nanukuloa 19-13.

With three minutes remaining on the clock, the Marlins substitute Varame Momo kicked two penalties.

Yasawa RU vice president Kaminieli Sadrata said, “The game was tough as Nanukuloa provided a stiff challenge. We took over in the second half and this is history for Yasawa as we have won the Vanua Cup and the Bainimarama Shield for the first time. Many people who attended the funeral for the late Naivalu stayed back to witness the game. We dedicate this win to Naivalu who was part of our committee.”

Nanukuloa coach Joji Rinakama said;

“Still a lot of work in progress, I’m happy with the game today. The boys played well and we finished the season on a high note.”
