We need a church that acts correctly and the synod will guide us to follow closely the heart of God.

These were sentiments by the Archbishop Peter Loy Chong of the Catholic Church of Fiji at the conclusion of the second Archdiocesan Synod for the Roman Catholic Church of Fiji and Rotuma.

He was speaking to the congregation which gathered at the Sacred Heart College grounds for the Mass after procession which saw thousands braving the weather yesterday.

The march was from My Suva Picnic Park through to the Sacred Heart College ground.

“We are used to hearing Churches have conferences and assemblies, we go to seminars where we make decisions,” the Archbishop Loy Chong said.

“In a synod we listen to you so that the Church may act correctly, do things the right way, do things according to God’s will and the synod will help the church to live correctly.

With the theme of ‘Connecting in Jesus’, the Catholic Church over the past year carried out widespread consultations and open debates around key issues such as:

  • Church and Sacramental life,
  • Family life, Youth, Education,
  • Church leadership and
  • Governance as part of its synodal journey

As an outcome from the synod the Archbishop shared with believers important messages centered around the Church and its missionary role.

“We need good leadership in parishes and good governance in churches,” the Archbishop said.

He also reinforced environmentalism in his message: “We will care for the environment and have to make to make sure that climate change and care for the environment must go together.”

The last Synod held by the Church was 29 years ago in 1990, under the late Archbishop Petero Mataca.
