It is all but confirmed that explosive Crusaders winger Sevuloni Reece will not play for Fiji at the Rugby World Cup in Japan this year.

However, Reece’s teammate, George Bower, could end up joining the squad in time for final selection.

Fiji Airways Flying Fijians head coach John McKee says he has been in ‘ongoing’ contact with the 27-year-old Fijian heritage prop – while communication with Reece seems to have stalled.

Reece and Bower made their debuts for the Crusaders in a round four 57-28 pounding of the Chiefs on March 9 in Christchurch.

With 15 tries, Reece became the Super Rugby’s leading try scorer in his debut season and is likely to finish at the top.

Fijian rugby fans were eager to see the Kadavu native join the World Cup squad, and McKee confirmed he had spoken to the winger about playing for Fiji.

But the move always seemed unlikely given Reece’s obligations with the Crusaders and his bid for an All Blacks call-up.

“Sevu Reece hasn’t declared his availability for Fiji and I probably don’t see that happening. He’s had plenty of opportunities to do so,” McKee said.

There seemed a bit more optimism in the case of Bower, although McKee chose not to elaborate on their discussions.

His place in the team, however, is far from guaranteed.

Bower will face stiff competition from Leeroy Atalifo, Campese Ma’afu, Eroni Mawi, Peni Ravai, Manasa Saulo, Luke Tagi, Kalivati Tawake and Joeli Veitayaki.
