A 63-year-old bedridden grandmother is in a state of  psychological shock after she was assaulted by a man inside her home at Nubu, outside Labasa Town on July 4.

Gyan Wati, who suffered injuries to her forehead and back, was discharged from Labasa Hospital on Sunday.

The incident has triggered strong fear reactions among members of the community.

Mrs Wati’s  husband, Ram Prasad, a sugarcane farmer said during his 68 years this was the first time someone robbed and stole money from the house in broad daylight.

The suspect also assaulted his wife who was alone inside the house after he left to transport cane around 10:30am.

“Upon reaching home at 2pm, I saw my wife lying unconscious with blood clots in her eyes and the back door was open,” Mr Prasad said.

There was also broken household items, misplaced, opened and damaged.

He sought assistance from his daughter-in-law next door to take  his wife to the hospital.

A report was lodged at the Wainikoro Police Station.

“But officers said there was no transport and so we called Labasa Police Station,” Mr Prasad said.

The father of four children and two grandchildren said this incident induced feelings of anxiety in the entire community of Nubu and some were in distress.

“Even though no arrest has been made we are aware that Police are doing its job,” he said.

“Such daring robbery is rare in our community and we will request for Police patrol or awareness.”

Mrs Wati has been bedridden for eight years because of a rare illness.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said  crime officers were following some leads.

“No arrest has been made into this alleged aggravated robbery,” Ms Naisoro said.
