The Fijian men’s Va’a team ended their four years medal drought after securing a bronze medal in the V12 event at Mulifanua yesterday.

Led by Lawai, Nadroga native Wilisoni Naqasima, the Fijian team of 20 put up a gutsy performance in the water to finish in third place behind gold medal winners New Caledonia and Wallis and Futuna who took out the silver medal.

It was also a special moment for Naqasima who also made his debut  the Pacific Games.

“This is my first Pacific Games and also for most of the boys,” he said.

“Definitely, it’s not going to be the last, we will come back stronger in the next Pacific Games.

“It was our first time to this environment and the learnings we can take from here is adapting to new canoes that are here.

“We’re not exposed to these new equipment but the boys adapted really well.

“This is a stepping stone for us especially for the fact that Fiji men’s Va’a team have finally secured another medal after a lapse of four years.

“I thank the boys for their effort and I dedicate the win to the boys at home, it was a massive effort from everyone in the final run.”
