Fiji Court of Appeal Judge Justice Suresh Chandra has issued notices to be served to Nai Lalakai column writer Josaia Waqabaca, former publisher of The Fiji Times Hank Arts and Fiji Times Ltd.

This is in respect of an appeal filed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions against the acquittal of the three respondents on a charge of sedition by the High Court in May 2018.

The notices were issued after the three respondents and their lawyers failed to turn up in court on the previous two occasions the case was called.

The notice required the respondents and their lawyers to appear on the next court date.

Waqabaca, Arts and Fiji Times Ltd were charged with sedition in respect of an item written by Waqabaca, which was published in the Fiji Times iTaukei vernacular newspaper Nai Lalakai on April 27, 2016.

It was alleged that it indicated that unless Nai Lalakai readers took action, Muslims would take over Fiji just as they had done in Bangladesh.

In June, 2018, the Director of Public Prosecutions Christopher Pryde said his office would only appeal against the acquittal of the Fiji Times Ltd, its then Publisher Hank Arts and column writer Josaia Waqabaca.

Mr Pryde had said there were four grounds for appeal.

The matter will be called again at the Fiji Court of Appeal on Wednesday July 17.
