Nirmala Wati will no longer have her favourite companion accompany her to sell vegetables on the roadside to earn an income for their family.

On Thursday just after 5pm, Ms Wati lost her grandson Rajiv Samuel Tale.

The seven-year-old was hit by a vehicle allegedly driven by a 34-year-old machinist from Tuvu along the road at Vitogo, Lautoka.

Ms Wati, 58, a vegetable roadside vendor, said Rajiv was like a close friend and dearest grandson to her.

“He was my pet, went with me everywhere and even sleeps with me. We were really close,” said the tearful grandmother.

“I will stop selling for now, I feel dejected because I really miss him.”

She said it was a horrific moment watching Rajiv lose his life while on their way to sell jackfruit.

“We were standing near the road about to cross and I was holding his hand,” she said.

“The vehicle hit him on the shoulder and dragged him for a few metres.

“The driver didn’t stop, but drivers coming from Ba towards Lautoka managed to stop.

“When I went to get Rajiv, the bones on his leg was out of place, his head was full of blood, I lifted him and checked his pulse but I knew he was no longer alive.

“I stopped some vehicles to help me take him to the hospital, but no one stopped, only one iTaukei man and woman took us to the Lautoka Hospital.”

Rajiv was a Year Two student at Qalitu Primary School in Lautoka and had a dream to be a Police officer.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the driver of the vehicle remained in custody while investigations continued.
