The Team Fiji men’s football side will now hope Tahiti beat undefeated New Caledonia side next Monday.

This is if they are to have any hopes of playing for gold at the Pacific Games.

New Caledonia beat Fiji 1-0 at J.S Blatter Football Complex yesterday to remain undefeated in the group.

Team captain Roy Krishna said: “It was disappointing, we have few chances but we couldn’t score.

“They had one chance and they scored from our mistake.

“Now we will have to work on our discipline.”

The two sides had a strong start in the first 20 minutes maintaining composure. But New Caledonia, who had the services of veteran striker Jean -Philippe Saiko, had a better control with attacking structures in place leaving Fiji to play a defensive game.

Fiji had a lot of chances to score but not combining well with strikers Krishna and Rusiate Matererega.

New Caledonia consistent pressure resulted in Setareki Hughes committing a foul in the penalty area.

Saiko scored for New Caledonia to lead 1-0 at halftime.

New Caledonia lifted momentum in the second half as they were able to counter Fiji’s attacking moves denying them chances to score.

Despite a man down, New Caledonia maintained composure to seal the game 1-0 at fulltime.

Fiji will play Tuvalu next Monday at 12pm (Fiji time) and their final pool match against Solomons on Thursday at 5pm(Fiji Time)

The Marika Rodu-coached women football side also went down to host Samoa 1-0 yesterday.

This loss has put them in a difficult position to be in a gold medal playoff.

Coach Marika Rodu said: “We will have to accept defeat, it’s a hard loss, we were not focussed from the beginning, we took Samoa lightly,”Rodu said.
