Alumita Marama sat quietly as she tended to baby Sulita at their home at Nabouciwa Village in Tailevu.

It was only yesterday when the news of her husband’s death was relayed to her.

She was uneasy at first, but a smile slowly appeared when she was asked to describe her husband, Varasiko Suku.

The 37-year-old died on Monday afternoon in an accident along Ratu Kadavulevu Road in Wainibokasi.

According to Police, the China Railway Company worker was crushed by a digger.

“He was a pillar of support for me and my children,” said Mrs Marama.

“Varasiko was one who was always smiling. He used to wake up in the morning, collect firewood and start helping me with the cooking

“I have no idea what to do now.”

The couple have five children, three of whom are in primary school.

Mr Suku was the sole breadwinner in the family, earning about $160 a week.

Mrs Marama said the two met 11 years ago. Mr Suku hailed from Nakoso in Cakaudrove and came to Nabouciwa to see his brother and met the love of his life there.

Turaga-ni-Koro Inoke Livanisiga said Mr Suku was one who was always mingling with everyone and helped out whenever he could.

“He played rugby for the village and he was just a good person to be around,” Mr Livanisiga said.

“It was on Monday when the Police came with four representatives from his employer.

“They told us that Varasiko was guiding the digger to fill a truck with soil when all of a sudden he was under the digger.

“They said they never saw what happened.”

Mrs Marama said they would now notify Mr Suku’s family in Nakoso and then funeral arrangements would be made.

For now, she is wondering how life will be without the man who had always stood by her and provided for their five children.
