South African freedom fighter and the country’s first black President, Nelson Mandela was remembered at an event at the Hilton Special School in Suva yesterday.

The school celebrated the Nelson Mandela International Day, which is held on the late politician’s birthday (July 18).

School head teacher Nanise Ravisa said staff members from the South African High Commission, Goodman Fielder and some South Africans living and working in Fiji attended the celebration.

The Nelson Mandela International Day was declared by the United Nations in November 2009 and the first celebration was held on July 18, 2010.

Mr Mandela was a non-violent anti-apartheid activist and politician who fought for social justice for 67 years and was also arrested and imprisoned in 1962.

He spent 27 years in prison and a few years after his release, he became South Africa’s first black President in a fully representative democratic election in 1994 and he held office until 1999.
