Rape Accused Allegedly Assaulted At Remand Centre

A stepfather facing charges related to sexual offences has alleged that he has been assaulted at the Suva Remand Centre.

The accused is charged with four counts of rape and four counts of sexual assault of his stepdaughter.

The alleged offence took place between May and June 2017 in Suva.

He appeared before High Court Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza yesterday, represented by Litiana Ratidara of the Legal Aid Commission.

Ms Ratidara told the court that the accused was allegedly assaulted at the Suva Remand Centre in the past few days.

She also told the court that due to the alleged assault, the accused sustained injuries and made an oral application for the accused to be taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital for a medical examination.

Justice Hamza granted the application and ordered that the accused be taken to the CWM Hospital, yesterday.

He also raised his concern on the number of allegations of assault at the Remand Centre made by accused persons.

He said it was sad to hear that accused persons were being assaulted at the Suva Remand Centre.

“I do not understand why the prison officers are doing such conducts. It is not only happening in Fiji but all over the world.

“However, some accused persons are bringing up the allegations of assault as an excuse,” Justice Hamza said.

The matter was adjourned to September 3 for mention to check on the medical examination report on the alleged assault claims.

The accused was further remanded in custody pending trial in September.
