A nine tonne truck caught fire while carting cane to the Labasa Mill yesterday along the Vatudova stretch in Macuata.

Fifty-four year old Prem Chand had left Soisoi to take the sugarcane to the Labasa mill when he encountered a problem.

“I noticed smoke coming off from the right side of the truck, I quickly applied the brakes to bring the truck to a halt, but the air break had caught fire,” Mr Chand said.

“The truck couldn’t stop, I had no other choice but to save my life,” he said.

“It was a matter of minutes and I had to act fast, the truck had rolled on into the ditch,” the teary driver said.

Mr Chand managed to grab a 40 litres gallon of water from the truck and tried to put out the fire but the fire had spread quickly.

“I then quickly called a friend in Labasa to call the fire brigade because I did not have the number, some people also came to help put the fire out,” the father of three said.

“I am thankful that the Fire Brigade responded and was able to put out the fire.”

The Police and National Fire Authority are continuing their investigations.
