Fiery loose forward, Peceli Yato, could get his run for the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians against Japan in the Pacific Nations Cup opener at the Kamaishi Recovery Memorial Stadium in the Iwate Prefecture, on Saturday.

The Clermont forward played in the French Top 14 grand final and had been put on a recovery programme where he had to miss the two Test matches against the Maori All Blacks.

Yato was among the nine players that flew out to Japan on Sunday. He is renowned for his high work rate and tenacious defence. Yato scored a try in the Flying Fijians 27-22 win over Scotland in 2017 and last November, he played in the 21-14 win over France in Paris.

Flying Fijians head coach John McKee said the changes had been made, partly with this year’s World Cup in mind. This is similar to what the All Blacks head coach Steve Hansen and his Springboks counterpart Rassie Erasmus are doing in the Rugby Championship.

“It’s an opportunity for these players to step up and show what they can do,” McKee said.

“Everyone in the squad is vying for a position in the final selection for the Rugby World Cup. We look at everything they do every day, but game form will count for them a lot.

“It’s a couple of big weeks for us and you want to keep firing your team and we look forward to being back home for the last two rounds of the Pacific Nations Cup at the end of the month,” he said.

The match kicks off at 5.20pm FJT.
