A Lautoka man responsible for organising a Qawali event at Tilak High School in Lautoka has apologised to the public after a brawl forced its abrupt end.

Ajay Singh, who organised the event by inviting two qawali singers to the school on July 20, said the purpose of the charity event was to help raise funds for a new home after his house was destroyed in a fire at Banaras, Lautoka, in February this year.

The issue was made known after a Facebook video of the two qawali singers, who allegedly attacked each other towards the end of the charity event, went viral on social media.

“The qawalis were told not to use any abusive language towards each other. They were constantly reminded of this. I didn’t know it would’ve ended like that,” Mr Singh said.

“One week prior to the event, we reminded them that the public is around and no abusive language is to be used at the event but towards the end when we were going to shut down, before we could reach the stage the brawl started.”

He said such attacks would not be condoned.

“I am embarrassed and ashamed because this happened when my family organised this to help rebuild my house,” Mr Singh said.

“We organised it in good faith and the outcome depended on me because I organised it.

“I am very sorry about what happened.”

Tilak High School trustee Prem Singh described the turn of events as embarrassing.

TISI Sangam president Sadasiwan Naicker said he was not aware of the incident.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said an investigation had been carried out.

“The complainant has to come in again today (yesterday) to give his statement as he was not feeling well yesterday (Monday),” she said.
