A bid by 19 cyclists from the ANZ Bank to help Cure Kids Fiji’s Oxygen Project has raised $106,000.

Nineteen cyclists from New Zealand, Fiji and Australia set off last Friday on a 500km ride across Fiji’s main island in the third annual ANZ Fiji500.

The aim of the event was to raise enough funds to purchase three more oxygen units.

Cure Kids Fiji Events and Partnerships Manager Jennifer Miller said the NGO found that oxygen was very expensive and in short supply and the Fiji Oxygen Project ensured that those who needed oxygen would get it.

“We currently have four systems installed and successfully operating at key centres throughout Fiji and more to be installed soon,” she said.

“Oxygen is a life-saving treatment for many severe illnesses in children, many of which are leading causes of death in Fiji.

“Yesterday these riders triumphantly concluded the event after four gruelling days on their bikes, having conquered heat, hills and their hamstrings.

“We are satisfied that at the end of the day we saved a lot of lives.”

ANZ Fiji Country Head Saud Minam said: “This is the third year our team has worked in partnership with Cure Kids Fiji to raise funds for their Fiji Oxygen Project.

“Support from ANZ has allowed the Cure Kids Fiji Oxygen Project to be extended to Nabouwalu, Tavua, Savusavu, and Taveuni Hospitals, providing a reliable and life-saving oxygen supply to more communities.”

ANZ New Zealand’s Relationship Manager for Lending Services, Amy Heath, took part in the Fiji500 for the first time this year.

“As a mother, it’s distressing to think of children who can’t access the medical care they need. This ride raises money for such a great cause.

“I’m keen for the challenge and look forward to seeing more of Fiji too,” Ms Heath said.

Cure Kids Fiji thanked all individuals who donated to the cause, as well as event sponsors ANZ, Higgins, Pleass Global, TTF, Fiji Airways, Takape Bicycling Workshop & Vasaqa Productions.
