Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says Fiji’s first batch of oral surgeons will graduate from the Fiji National University this year.

The Master of Oral Surgery was launched in 2017 at the Fiji National University and its first two trainees have just completed the programme.

During an official dinner hosted by the Fiji Dental Association on Saturday night, Dr Waqainabete presented a recognition award to Professor Jayantha Weerasinghe for developing the programme.

Dr Waqainabete thanked Professor Weerasinghe for his service to the Fijian public and said they must all work together in creating innovative solutions to further dental science in the country.

Professor Weerasinghe, who is originally from Sri Lanka, joined FNU in 2013 where he developed the Postgraduate Diploma in Oral Surgery training programme for hospital-based dental officers and later the master’s programme.

“The two trainees from the master’s programme will need to work two more years under my supervision to attain the specialist status,” he said.

By the end of this year FNU would have trained 20 dentists across nine countries in the Post Graduate programme.

“Many other countries will continue to send their trainees for the two programmes because such a training facility is only available at FNU for small island countries in the Pacific,” Professor Weerasinghe said.
