Search operations continue in Natewa Bay.

Search operations of the missing helicopter pilot Gilbert Parker and a 2-year-old child continues this morning in the Natewa Bay Area.

The Rescue Coordination Centre Fiji said there are 42 volunteers assisting in the ground search today

This includes members of the Fiji Police Force and Republic of Fiji Military Forces.

They are combing 10km shoreline with boats covering 18 nautical mile of the coastline.

The four-seater white Robinson ‘R’44 helicopter, registration DQ- HPT crashed into the Natewa Bay waters on Friday night.

The ill-fated flight was on a medical evacuation when the accident happened. Three passengers were onboard including the 2-year-old child who needed urgent medical attention at the Labasa Hospital.

A body of a woman, the mother of the 2-year-old boy was found the following day.

The Coordination Centre confirmed that the following search areas has been covered since Saturday.
– Approximately 180 square miles of total area by aircraft has been covered
– 30 km of shoreline searched by ground teams
– 40 square miles of coastline covered by 5 boats
– 0.2 square miles searched by divers.

Currently 42 personnel, 4 boats, and 1 aircraft are directly involved in the operation.

The Navy Hydrographic team were deployed this morning and will begin with multibeam sonar searches as soon as practicable.
