Fiji Airways Interested to Do Own Ground Handling, Catering Says Attorney-General

Fiji Airways had expressed its interest to do its own ground handling at Nadi International Airport and its own catering, Parliament was told yesterday.

Attorney-General and Minister responsible for Civil Aviation Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum made this disclosure while responding to questions by Opposition whip Lynda Tabuya.

Ms Tabuya asked: “Ground handling services that is currently done by the Air Terminal Services for the last 35 years, will that be taken over by Fiji Airways? And if so when will that happen?”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum replied that only recently there was a sweep done of the lockers of people that offloaded the bags in our planes and they found numerous personal items of people. He said the items had been taken out of suitcases.

He said people’s stuff was being taken out of their bags while they sat in the planes.

He said at the moment Fiji Airways was thinking of putting cameras in the luggage hold of planes “so it’s easy to locate those people who are involved.”

He said it was not only about reporting it to the Police, it was about having the right culture within the organisation.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum also highlighted that organisations like the ATS needed to understand the modern ways of running airports and air services that it needed to have a lot of professionalism.

He added that those were the reasons Fiji Airways would want to do their own ground handling and catering because of the shenanigans that actually went on.

“There’s no exclusivity in place as far as the legal framework is concerned,” he said.

He also clarified that the operation management of the Fiji Airways was not carried out by the Fijian Government.
