The US Army and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces conducted an urban tactical exercise in Savusavu yesterday as part of a bilateral training programme between the two forces.

The programme is known as the Exercise Cartwheel.

US Army Lieutenant Michael Fink of B Company, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade, Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, said the relationship with the Fijian forces was very important.

“Maintaining readiness and friendliness with the Republic of Fiji Military Forces is important because we need to be ready to deploy at any given time anywhere in the world with them, and Exercise Cartwheel forges that relationship,” he said.

“The training is hard and is designed to help us create a strong bond quickly with the Fijian Army.

“It really helps build cohesion, because there’s a common sharing of hardship and difficulty.”

Exercise Cartwheel ends on August 12.
