Fiji Airways Flying Fijians utility back Josh Matavesi is expecting a physical encounter against Manu Samoa in the final round of the Pacific Nations Cup at the ANZ Stadium, Suva, on Saturday.

“I know the Samoans are not happy with the way they played against the United States so they should come out firing,” he said.

Matavesi, who played first-five eight against Canada last Saturday, said it was a challenge for him.

“I’ve been playing at number 12 for three years. There’s still a lot of work to be done.”

Goalkicking

The Vanuabalavu native and Alivereti Veitokani worked on their goal-kicking yesterday with assistant coach Neil Barnes after the team completed their training session.

After the big 38-13 win over Canada, Matavesi said they still needed to work harder.

“It’s about keeping your focus on the big picture, which is the Rugby World Cup. For us it’s about doing the little things right and trying to put on that complete performance.”

Family affair

Matavesi highlighted that he enjoyed their camp, especially being together with his brother Sam.

“Our family have joined us and they are here to have a great family time,” he said.

Training

Head coach John McKee yesterday divided the players into three groups as they went through their training stations.

Senior assistant coach Tabai Matson was also involved by taking the players through phases of play and improving on their kicking skills.

Leading the charge was captain Dominiko Waqaniburotu, assisted by senior players like Leone Nakarawa, Campese Ma’afu, Ben Volavola, Api Ratuniyarawa and Vereniki Goneva.
