A formal investigation will be carried out at the Lautoka Hospital following an alleged abuse and mistreatment of a patient last month.

The Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Civil Service, Bernadette Welch confirmed this yesterday.

Ms Welch said Mr Kumar was advised to make a formal complaint which was a directive given to him by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete.

Mr Kumar claims on the morning of his review, he waited in a wheelchair at the Men’s Medical Ward for five hours because there were no beds available for him.

“I went there at 9am, they kept me waiting in the wheelchair until 2pm,” he claimed.

“I went to the men’s ward and they told me no bed was empty, I returned home and called the ambulance at 6.30pm to take me to the hospital.”

He claimed four nurses at the hospital spoke rudely to him.

“There were four nurses and they said ‘now what’, they made me more frustrated and some nurses told me I’m too fat and laughed about it,” he claimed.

“I didn’t want to be in that environment because I was frustrated.”
