New inter-island vessel MV Ohana yesterday set a travel time between Nabouwalu and Natovi at two hours 35 minutes.

“That is a record time, all this time we were saying less than three hours, now we know that Ohana is capable of traveling that route in two hours 35 minutes,” Interlink Shipping director Asish Kumar said.

“This is for the convenience of our travellers that include business people, tourists, Northerners, travellers and the likes,” he said.

“Such a time allows people to do more and our service includes pick up from Suva right through to Savusavu and return, passengers can purchase their tickets at our Savusavu, Labasa and Suva offices.

MV Ohana had left for Nabouwalu early yesterday morning for Savusavu and from there did its test run for its usual Nabouwalu to Natovi route.

Meanwhile while launching the new MV Ohana  on Monday night Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji acting chief executive officer Philip Hill said any investment made on ships was an investment to the people of Fiji.

“It is an honour to support the inclusion of a new ship; any investment on ships is an investment to the people of Fiji,” Mr Hill said.

“Any investment on ships by Interlink ships and other shipping companies is an investment into the infrastructure of Fiji connecting our islands through a network of shipping routes that supports safe and connecting nations,” he said.

Sea travel needs to be modern, needs to be comfortable and needs to be safe similar to land travel.

Mr Hill alluded that 90 per cent of trade domestically and internationally is carried out by ships.

Earlier in the day MV Ohana  was issued with the registration certificate, survey certificate and safe management certificate.

The roll on roll off vessel has the capacity to carry 337 passengers, 16 crew, 24 trucks or 60 cars.

MV Ohana  following its receiving its Registration Certificate, Survey Certificate and Safe Ship Management Certificate on Monday now departs Natovi  for Nabouwalu at 6am then depart Nabouwalu to return to Natovi  10am daily.

ISL Suva office is located at Office 907 Suva Flea Market, Main St in Labasa and Savusavu.
