Divine Intervention Gave Us Win: QVS Star, Rusiate Vakalutugone
Under 18 Super Deans Trophy winner, Queen Victoria School.

Queen Victoria School ended their three-year drought when they fought back to edge out defending champions Ratu Kadavulevu School 13-12 in the Vodafone Super Deans Trophy Under-18 final at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka yesterday.

QVS fullback Rusiate Vakalutugone was the toast of the side after landing one conversion and two penalties to bring them the much-needed win.

Vakalutugone told SUNsports that spiritual preparation was their secret recipe.

“We knew RKS will be tough so what made the difference was our spiritual preparation,” he said.

“We were fasting and having our lotu (devotion) every morning at the church. This was our biggest motivation.”

When asked what was in his mind when lining up to kick the winning penalty the fullback said,

“When I was about to take that kick I asked God to help me. I want to thank all QVS supporters and this win is dedicated to them.”

What happened: Both teams started well in the first half as they displayed entertaining rugby in their attacking and also in their defence.

The RKS backline broke through the QVS defence and scored their opening try through Sanaila Daliga with the conversion from halfback Jovilisi Taraka going over for a 7-0 lead. Vakalutugone was successful with a penalty just before halftime.

Halftime: RKS 7-3 QVS.

QVS lifted momentum in the second half as they were able to disrupt the RKS counter rucks. RKS managed to control possession as hooker Samuela Draunidalo scored their second try with the conversion missing for a 12-3 lead..

QVS fought back as halfback Sefanaia Kaivei scored their lone try after pouncing on a loose RKS pass and Vakalutugone converted to narrow the deficit 13-10.

With less than 5 minutes to play QVS applied the pressure and RKS gave away a penalty as Vakalutugone converted the winning points.

Comment: RKS assistant principal Walesi Soqoiwasa said: “We lost to a better side.”
