Business owners and residents, of one of Nadi’s tourist centers, are concerned with the growing number of allegedly drunken people sleeping on the sidewalks during the weekends.

They are mainly party-goers and nightclub patrons who enjoy the nightspots but end up sleeping on the sidewalks or in front of shops.

A senior resident, Ronnie Chang, said seeing heavily intoxicated young men and women between 5 am and 6 am is always a sad, pitiful and unwelcome sight.

“They create a gross disturbance of the peace. I have observed men urinating in public places. It is a big shame,” he said.

“It has become a common scenario every morning from Saturday to Monday.”

Mr. Chang said he witnessed such sad sights during his regular morning walks from his Mountain View residence.

On Sunday Mr. Chang saw a man lying down in front of a shop with no shoes on.

“I stand to be corrected, but looked as if someone had already stolen from this guy in his dead drunk stupor,” he said.

“The extended night club hours are a definite contributing cause. Authorities need to close nightclub hours at 1 am.

“All nightclub employees and musicians should be resting after 1 am not working till 5 am daily.”

Hotel Martintar director Ben Krishna shared similar sentiments.

“It is an eyesore. These people are not beggars. They have homes yet they are knocked out on the side streets and I don’t feel comfortable at all,” he said.

Police said drunkards found lying on the pavements were taken to the station, some were charged for being drunk and incapable, then released when they are sober to go home.

Meanwhile, the Martintar-Namaka corridor adds to the growing “tourism” strip benefiting from the extended opening hours allowed throughout the country. There are more than 30 bars and restaurants along the area.
