Floodlights and street lights have been installed in various areas around Suva City that were once dark places for people to go to.

The Suva City Council said there were two reasons to install the lights at various locations.

One of the reasons is to beautify the city and the other is to brighten up those areas which are frequented by people at night also, for their safety and security.

According to the council, 14 floodlights have been installed at Sukuna Park and three at the library.

The floodlights installed at the library shine towards the area where people sell barbecue and hotdogs.

People have been mugged near this area and across the road along Victoria Parade in the past few weeks.

The council said 16 lights have been installed at Thurston Gardens, six lights at My Suva Park and eight street lights have been put up at the Suva foreshore.

Also, lights in the foreshore car park that were not working have been upgraded by the council.

The lights are switched on at about 7 pm every day.

The council also said that all CCTV cameras that had been installed in various parts of the city were working.
