A Year 10 student in Suva, who traveled down to Nadi for his school holidays, regretted how it turned out.

This was after the student who was staying with his grandfather at his aunt’s home at Goundar Road in Martintar, Nadi was allegedly still at home when part of the four-bedroom home caught fire yesterday.

The boy claimed he was frying sausages in the kitchen area when he left them on the stove for a moment to visit the washroom at around 2.30pm.

He said when he returned; the fire had spread to the kitchen area and was slowly going towards the washhouse base.

“I was frying sausages and went to the toilet when I returned there was a fire in the kitchen and it was slowly spreading to the washhouse and the living room,” he said.

“I managed to save myself, my grandfather and some items from the home and I think the neighbours called the fire brigade in time and they managed to save three bedrooms.”

The National Fire Authority Chief Fire Officer, Qiolevu Moceitai confirmed the incident yesterday.

Mr. Moceitai said he had received a report of the fire and his officers were still carrying out investigations as to what caused the fire.
