Akshay Chand yesterday fulfilled his dream of following in his father’s footsteps after he was sworn-in during the ceremony for new barristers and solicitors at the Grand Pacific Hotel.

He studied at the University of the South Pacific’s Bachelor of Laws programme.

The 24-year-old said: “It is a proud moment for me and my family because I am the second lawyer in the family now.”

Mr Chand said he knew what he wanted to do when he started high school and hopes to open his own law firm.

“My plans are to learn as much as possible and perhaps move to New Zealand or Australia to open my own business.”

He was attached with Pacific Barristers and Solicitors in Nausori and Legal Aid Commission in Nasinu.

His father, Anil Chand who is the senior legal officer at the Legal Aid Commission said: “He has done it on his own. It was not much of my guidance but his mum was always there to support him.

“It’s been a journey and it feels so good to see my child grow.”

Acting Chief Justice Kamal Kumar reminded the lawyers of their responsibilities.

“As lawyers you will have to solve problems. You will be called upon to make decisions that will affect and change people’s lives.

“You must not forget that after being admitted to the Bar you are officers of the court.
