Vodafone Fiji football national head coach Christophe Gamel quits yesterday citing personal reasons.

Gamel revealed he needed to spend more time with his eight-year-old son.

“This is a mutual understanding. As I always say to players, family comes first,” Gamel said.

“This is a family situation that I have to fix, I have an eight-year-old son and it’s just difficult to stay away from each other for such a long time. I don’t want my son growing up without his dad.

Memorable moments in Fiji

“I have both bad and good moments. The bad ones are critics but were able to shut them up with winning six, losing three and drew one in 10 games. It was a good achievement that Fiji did not achieve for quite some time,” he said.

“Also a silver medal win during the 2017 Pacific Mini Games and the bronze medal win at the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa, where we played against teams that had longer recovery session than ours. But it was a good fight from the team.”

He enjoyed the Fijian hospitality.

“When I landed in Fiji in the first day, I love the Fijian people, they were very welcoming, very friendly. We don’t have that in Europe. Fijians are amazing.

“It was easy for me to adapt here, I come from a poor background, I’m simple and I will always keep Fiji at heart. If Fiji needs me I will come back.”

Gamel leaves at the end of the month.
