The 22-year-old tertiary student who is alleged to have assaulted a Police officer last week has been given bail to continue his tertiary education.

Noa Toga appeared before Magistrate Bandula Gunaratne yesterday at the Magistrates Court in Lautoka.

He is charged with one count of serious assault.

It is alleged that Toga, while being intoxicated, assaulted a Police officer along Tavakubu Road in Lautoka on August 17.

Toga opted for Legal Aid Commission representation and made an oral bail application before the Magistrate.

Police prosecutor Constable Veni Vunaki objected to the bail application on the grounds that the matter was of public interest.

However, Toga told the court that he was remorseful for his actions and requested that bail be granted because he was a final year tertiary student and wished to complete his studies.

Magistrate Gunaratne then granted Toga with a bail bond sum of $500 and two sureties bail bond sum of $500 each.

Toga was also ordered to report to the Lautoka Police Station on the last Saturday of every month between 9 am and 3 pm.

The matter was adjourned to October 18 for mention.
