The Fiji Football Association will be looking at hiring a national coach who will be able to continue the philosophy laid down by Christophe Gamel.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel said they would consider a coach from Europe.

Current coach Gamel stepped down due to family commitments and will leave Fiji at the end of the month.

“We will have to get someone who can carry on the work started by Gamel in changing the face of Fijian football,” said Patel

“We need a coach from Europe to carry on the type of play, philosophy, set up and the pattern Gamel has been implementing.

“If we go into any other continent, the game, pattern of play and everything is different from the coaching they do.

“Here it is much more on the ground and that’s why you see the different game played by coaches from Europe continent than other coaches.”

Ref Khanna Get Legends Medal

Fiji Football Association yesterday honoured one of its most successful referees with a legends medal.

Fiji FA chief executive officer Mohammed Yusuf presented the legend’s medal to former Fiji FA and FIFA referee Gopal Khanna at Fiji FA Headquarters in Vatuwaqa.

Yusuf said Fiji FA was not just honouring the former players but also referees and administrators.

“We are not only recognizing the hard work put in by the former players only but we are proud to honour our referees and former administrators, “said Yusuf.

“These people have created an impact on Fiji and Khanna is one of them,”

Yusuf said Gopal was one of the greatest referees to come out of Fiji during his time.

Khanna, who resides in the USA, said he was proud to be honoured by Fiji FA.

‘I am so happy that we are recognized by Fiji FA for our contribution to the sport in Fiji.

“I think it is a good initiative by Fiji FA Board led by Rajesh Patel to honour former football players, referees and administrators.
