The 5000 e-Passports are on their way.

This was the assurance from Director Immigration, Nemani Vuniwaqa, during a press conference in Suva yesterday.

He said the shipment from Germany was departing today and would take about five days to arrive.

“Once it arrives we will ensure that the installation of the new system to support the e-Passport is in place,” he said.

It would take a further two weeks for the department to conduct familiarisation training before the books are issued.

The cause for delay of the books was because of logistics issues, he said.

Mr Vuniwaqa had also confirmed that there would be an increase in the price of passports.

He added that the travel document regulations were still under review at the Solicitor-General’s office.

“Hopefully by the next Parliament sitting the bill and regulation will be passed in Parliament,” he said.

He said they had about 9000 pending e-Passport applications.

The department would take two weeks to issue the first 5000 passports and within this period more books would also be arriving.

“People have been waiting for too long and we will ensure that we will facilitate as per the schedules.”

He said the old passports could still be used however, an individual could get a new one.

The system is expected to be normalised a month after the issuance of the first set of books is5000 issued.
