A 44-year-old businessman of Nausori has been found guilty of one count of being in possession of an illicit drug.

Ravindra Singh appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne at the Nausori Court on Thursday for judgment.

Singh on March 23, 2018, at Nausori in the Central Division, without lawful authority had in his possession 0.2 grams of methamphetamine, an illicit drug.

The accused pleaded not guilty wherefore this proceeded for the hearing.

During the hearing, the prosecution called five witnesses and for the defence the accused and another witness gave evidence.

Magistrate Somaratne said: “I am satisfied that the witnesses called by the prosecution are credible and reliable witnesses and they are also telling the truth in the court.

“Compared to that the accused testimony in the court is not convincing and lacks credibility. Hence, I reject his version in this case about the Police trying to frame him for this charge.

“I am satisfied that the accused intentionally had in his possession illicit drugs knowing them to be drugs without lawful authority on March 23, 2018.

“Hence the prosecution proved this charge beyond reasonable doubt against the accused. I find the accused guilty for this charge and convict him accordingly,” Magistrate Somaratne said.

The sentencing will be on September 10
