Turaga na Tui Macuata Ratu Wiliame Katonivere will be meeting with other chiefs to discuss ways on tackling the growing problem of methamphetamine.

Ratu Wiliame said he had heard and was informed of the meth issue and was concerned with the impact the drug could have.

“This is not a small issue. Meth concerns me, it concerns everyone in the country. I have heard that it is in the North. Now that is worrying to me,” he said.

“I will be talking with the chiefs and village heads on how we can collectively deal with this issue.

“There could a traditional approach that may let us help deal with this modern problem.”

Ratu Wiliame said he was aware of the devastation caused by the narcotics in nearby countries and that is why he was worried.

Police Commissioner Sitiveni Qiliho announced the formation of a narcotics bureau to deal with the growing meth problem in the country.

Police have also revealed the possibility of organised gangs operating at a local level who are responsible for the manufacture and distribution of the drug.

Defence Minister Inia Seruiratu has also admitted that meth poses danger that transcended borders.

Police have been involved in training that deals with narcotics with overseas Police including the China Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
