The formation of the Men Empowerment Network (MEN) has received support from men and women as well.

It is the first organisation established in the country to look at issues faced by men and to be a voice for them.

Some women have also commented on social media, welcoming the formation of the organisation.

An awareness programme was held in Suva yesterday by MEN, which was formed by a former school teacher and Fijian Elections Office employee, Paul Isaac Morrell.

Faiaaz Ali, a community worker of Lautoka, said the formation of MEN was welcome news because it was high time that such a body was formed for men suffering in silence.

Mr Ali said he was pleased to know the reasons for which the organisation had been formed.

The theme for yesterday’s awareness programme was ‘Stand Up! Step Up! Take A Stand!’

Mr Morrell said men who attended the session came with an enthusiastic mind.

“They portrayed ideas like involving women into their seminars and to work hand in hand with them for better understanding of empowerment in Fiji,” he said.

He also said the men raised an issue about the use of the word empowerment during the session.

“I explained to them that the word empowerment is used to empower men in our society from all the dis-empowerment they experience,” Mr Morrrell said .

“Some of them also raised the issue of women getting raped and then reporting it to Police, but there were also cases of men being raped by men, but they did not report it to avoid embarrassment.”

Mr Morrrell said similar awareness programmes would be held around the country next month before the official launch of the organisation.
